Mobile TV Up In The Air; Two Groups Propose Rival Standards |

Just as a new mobile TV service is being launched through cellular carriers in the United States, two groups have proposed rival standards to enable traditional TV broadcasters to bypass cellular and broadcast directly to a variety of mobile devices. The move is likely to further confuse a market that’s already struggling to find the right technology and business model. Until now, mobile TV has been delivered as a subscription to mobile phones through cellular service providers, but using cellular to transmit TV may not scale to high volumes, say some analysts. Cellular is by nature a peer-to-peer technology, which means that transmitting more TV to more users can quickly eat up capacity. That’s why mobile service providers are interested in a new type of service that’s become available this year from several mobile-TV startups. These companies are launching true broadcast services—they own spectrum and are building an infrastructure to send the signal out into the ether, from which it can be received by any device with the appropriate receiver and tuner....more (0) Comments
