Synthetic Means More Than Nylon

PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 12 December 2006
If you’ve heard about synthetic instruments (SIs), then you already may know that SI systems are solving many military and aerospace testing problems. SIs are not new: BAE Systems developed some of the first arbitrary function generators and sampling measurement systems more than 20 years ago for ATE use. Nevertheless, legacy ATE systems associated with military programs typically have used a mix of specially designed and COTS instruments. When a COTS instrument becomes obsolete, it’s a major problem. Billions of dollars have been invested in developing and verifying the test program sets (TPS) that run on these ATE systems. Many types of systems exist because, until relatively recently, the separate branches of the military required ATE systems specific to their own equipment....more  Discuss Topic (0) Comments

Characterizing And Troubleshooting Wide-Band RF Systems

PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 07 December 2006
The proliferation of wireless devices and an unrelenting demand for higher data rates have placed a significant strain on the RF spectrum. As bandwidth requirements for RF components and systems continue to increase, spectrum availability has become a serious challenge. System operators must use every hertz of the RF spectrum as efficiently as possible, yet they must also take great care to avoid interference with other signals that are closer and more prevalent than ever before. Of course, all of this must be accomplished as quickly and with the lowest capital expenditure possible, resulting in a classic engineering dilemma....more  Discuss Topic (0) Comments

Kiethley PXI Line Supports Broad Array Of Instruments

PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 29 November 2006
Keithley Instruments has entered the large and rapidly growing PXI-modular-instrumentation market with a bang. The company's announcement of the KPXI line includes simultaneous-data-acquisition boards, multifunction and high-speed analog-I/O boards, a 130M-sample/sec digitizer module, digital-I/O modules, several PXI chassis and embedded-PC controllers, MXI bridges for remote PC control, and IEEE 488-interface cards. The line includes approximately 16 new hardware products as well as new software. A point-and-click test-code creator automatically generates C-language test code without programming. A configuration/setup tool tests and calibrates the hardware, verifies its operation, and performs diagnostic routines. A set of National Instruments' LabView virtual instruments speeds test-code development. Drivers are included for LabView and for Microsoft .net, Visual Basic, Visual C, C++, and C#. A .DLL interface enables compatibility with virtually all programming environments and helps you to build your own drivers....more  Discuss Topic (0) Comments

DSOs Speed Power-Supply-Design Validation And Testing

PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 28 November 2006
Improvements in power MOSFETs, regulators, and control circuits have made switching power supplies smaller and have enabled power densities greater than 1W/in.3 with efficiencies exceeding 90%. Product life cycles are shrinking rapidly, and competition is becoming tougher. When designs are similar, a shorter time to market or a shorter production cycle can make the winning difference. By using features unique to digital oscilloscopes, engineers can now considerably reduce power-supply-test time. DSOs (digital-storage oscilloscopes) acquire waveforms as sequences of numbers, enabling the automation of many complex calculations....more  Discuss Topic (0) Comments

Adding A Benchtop Look And Feel To Modular Instruments

PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 22 November 2006
ZTEC Instruments is currently celebrating its 10-year anniversary. ZTEC was founded as a custom-design-engineering firm. Our early efforts led to the development of our first standard product, a VXI-based digitizer. Development of standard products became a priority....more  Discuss Topic (0) Comments
