Tektronix announced the company has made advances in the application of direct synthesis (DS) for high speed serial receiver compliance testing. Direct synthesis is a flexible and repeatable method for creating ideal or impaired waveforms that are then directly synthesized by the Tektronix AWG7000 arbitrary waveform generator. This enables precise and uniform testing of high speed serial data receivers, yielding higher quality computing and consumer electronic devices. Direct synthesis with the AWG7000 has been approved as a normative test technique for the SATA Interop Workshops....more (0) Comments |

Measuring low currents can be tricky. Clever analog-design techniques and the right parts and equipment can help. Thousands of applications require a circuit to measure a small current. One of the most common is the measurement of photodiode current to infer the light impinging on the diode. Scientific applications, such as CT (computer-tomography) scanners, gas chromatographs, and photo-multiplier and particle and beam monitoring, all require low-level current measurements. In addition to these direct applications, the manufacturers of semiconductors, sensors, and even wires must measure extraordinarily low currents to characterize their devices. Leakage current, insulation-resistance measurements, and other parameters require consistent, accurate measurements to establish data-sheet specifications....more (0) Comments |

Find out how to make accurate low-power mode measurements to get the highest efficiencies. Overall system efficiency is a critical design parameter in battery powered systems. It affects both the battery capacity requirement and the end product's run time. Proper system efficiency and run time calculations can be achieved only when the power supply's efficiency measurements are accurate. Most battery powered systems take advantage of a power supply feature called pulse frequency modulation (PFM) to improve power supply efficiency at light loads. The same characteristics that help PFM mode achieve high power supply efficiencies also create several challenges for properly measuring the efficiency....more (0) Comments |

Finding Hidden Problems: Why A Scope's Update Rate Matters |

Engineers live in fear of the unknown. Any problem or trade-off, if adequately managed, can be mitigated by the engineer's skill. The problems that one doesn't see, such as intermittent signal anomalies (a glitch), become increasingly expensive as they propagate to quality testing, manufacturing or to customers. A fast update rate—a frequently misunderstood characteristic— is critical to an oscilloscope's ability to display these problems....more (0) Comments |

In an ideal world, a 16-bit, 20 GSamples/s digital-to-analog converter (DAC) would generate accurate RF signals for a variety of modern communications protocols. However, ASICs with this kind of performance are still an RF engineer's dream. As a result, today's wireless devices require a series of DACs and RF mixers to convert digital baseband signals into the RF domain. Most RF transmitters use one of two upconversion approaches: the heterodyne upconversion or homodyne (direct) upconversion approach....more (0) Comments |
