Microsoft, Ericsson, Philips Join UN Global Recycling Scheme

Leading companies including Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Dell, Ericsson and Philips and Cisco Systems have joined a United Nations initiative that aims to harmonize world policy and legislative approaches to electronic recycling and to standardize recycling processes. Such processes could impact the design of ICs, packaging and equipment to better support reuse and recycling as well as stricter rules on the disposal of electronics. Judge Saves Microsoft From $1.5B Damages Award

A federal judge has cleared Microsoft in its MP3 case with Alcatel-Lucent, saying the Vista OS maker will not have to pay the more than $1.5 billion damages award granted to Alcatel-Lucent in late February. At that time, Microsoft had claimed the case was “completely unsupported by the law or the facts.” US District Judge Rudi Brewster in San Diego on Thursday reportedly dismissed Alcatel-Lucent’s claims in a summary judgment, thereby canceling the trial slated to begin on March 19. January Chip Sales Up By 9.2 Percent From 2006

Worldwide sales of semiconductors of $21.47 billion in January were 9.2 percent higher than January 2006 when sales were $19.66 billion, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported. January sales reflected a seasonal decline of 1.2 percent from the $21.74 billion reported in December. “January semiconductor sales reflected historical seasonal patterns, with strong year-on-year sales growth coupled with a modest sales sequential decline,” said SIA President George Scalise. “The semiconductor industry continues to benefit from consumer confidence which has been buoyed by recent gains in both personal and disposable income....more  Discuss Topic (0) Comments
 

Congress Mounts Alternative-Energy Charge

Alternative energy sources have moved front and center in Congress in response to voter outrage over energy prices and oil company profits, as well as rising concerns over US dependency on foreign sources and fossil fuels' role in climate change. The House of Representatives approved energy legislation this month that originated with the House Science and Technology Committee. The Advanced Fuels Infrastructure Research and Development Act--the first energy legislation pushed through by the Democratic majority in the House--is intended to make biofuels more affordable and more accessible to retailers. Other legislation introduced in the House would redirect tax and other benefits given to oil companies to a Strategic Energy Efficiency and Renewable Resources Reserve. Tennessee Rep. Bart Gordon, who chairs the House Science Panel, said funds from the reserve would be used for "R&D to accelerate the production and use of new biofuels; increase the use of renewable energy, like solar, wind, and geothermal; and boost energy efficiency."...more  Discuss Topic (0) Comments
 

Wind River Acquires Hard Real-Time Linux Technology From FSMLabs

Wind River Systems announced that it has acquired the intellectual property including patents, copyrights, trademarks and associated product rights for RTLinux, the software industry's only commercially-available, patented, hard real-time Linux technology developed by Finite State Machine Labs. Pursuant to the purchase agreement, Wind River also acquired rights to future runtime revenue streams for RTLinux customers in the embedded applications field.
