Extending EU Regulations With REACH

PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 25 April 2007
Despite the hassle many electronic companies went through, and are still going through, to find alternative substances to replace materials forbidden by the European Union Commission’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive (RoHS), a new challenge will soon appear: the EU’s Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH), a regulation that will control the use of tens of thousands of chemicals, many of which are used in the electronics supply chain. REACH, like RoHS, aims to make the environment cleaner and stop endangering manufacturers’ personnel and users of their equipment. Unlike RoHS, which focuses on hazardous materials, REACH focuses on hazardous chemicals....more  Discuss Topic (0) Comments

Kaleidescape Versus Studios: Real Horror Show

PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 24 April 2007
The story of Kaleidescape, as told in court testimony in San Jose, CA, recently, provides a cautionary tale about some of the thorniest snares in digital media design today. For now, the tiny startup is enjoying a moment of victory. At least temporarily, it has dodged the threat of having its product, a novel home media server, banned from the market. But Kaleidescape will likely be entangled soon in an appeal, and it has not escaped the wider thicket of distrust that stretches from Silicon Valley to Hollywood. That environment still crimps and contorts innovation for people in both camps....more  Discuss Topic (0) Comments

Feds Say Accenture, HP, Sun Kickback Scheme Involved Millions Over 10 Years

PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 23 April 2007
Accenture, Hewlett-Packard, and Sun Microsystems have operated illegal kickback schemes over the last 10 years that have bilked taxpayers out of millions of dollars annually through government IT contracts, federal prosecutors say. The allegations were contained in separate lawsuits filed last week in an Arkansas federal court by the Department of Justice. The complaints claimed the defendants paid or received kickbacks from dozens of companies in violation of federal law, while denying that they had such arrangements. In filing the complaints, the DOJ joined whistleblower suits that were filed against the companies in 2004....more  Discuss Topic (0) Comments

Worldwide PC Shipments Touch 62.7 Million Units, Up 9% In Q1 2007

PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 23 April 2007
According to preliminary results by Gartner, worldwide PC shipments totaled 62.7 million units in the first quarter of 2007, a 8.9% increase from the same period last year. Gartner said the worldwide total is in line with its earlier projections; however the geographic regions showed mixed results. The United States, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and Latin America regions performed better than Gartner's forecast while Asia/Pacific and Japan shipments were lower than expected. The Asia/Pacific region surpassed the US PC market to take the No. 2 position in terms of shipments for the first time. Microsoft's official consumer launch of Vista in January, had very limited impact on overall worldwide shipment demand on a quarterly basis. On a monthly basis, mature regions experienced a bubble in demand following its release. Vista adoption was primarily in the consumer and very small business segments of the mature regions....more  Discuss Topic (0) Comments
